Shaws are the oldest family owned, chutney making business in Yorkshire and one of the oldest in the country. George Shaw founded Shaws Relish Works with his two sons, Walter and Vincent in 1889. They built up the family business through an array of products including relishes, jams and pickles, marrowfat peas and baking powder.

Now proudly celebrating their 130th anniversary this year (2019), Shaws continues to grow in a steady, sustainable way to pass on to future generations. Run by a passionate and caring team who are all involved in making the best products they can, including 5th generation Matthew Shaw as chairman and 6th generation Annie Shaw as graduate trainee.

Shaws buys British ingredients and packaging where possible. Such as British sugar and British glass but in this international economic climate they do look elsewhere for some raw materials as there is still not a viable Mango harvest in Yorkshire!

Their core products total nine chutneys and relishes, made to original recipes, across two ranges: The Heritage Collection, which supply delicatessens, and the Everyday Range, found in most Yorkshire branches of the main supermarkets and nationwide through Morrisons.

With an eye on the future they have just reformulated their Caramelised Red Onion chutney and will be launching a Smoky Chilli Jelly before Christmas.

“Shaws is dyed-in-the-wool Huddersfield, to use an apt phrase. Even the gates of the factory were once those of the Old Market Hall, which were rescued in 1971.”
