England’s most capped player Peter Shilton was the star attraction at the Yorkshire Business Forum on Wednesday afternoon.
Almost 300 business delegates packed the Revell Ward Suite at the John Smith’s Stadium for the afternoon event, which was run in association between Huddersfield Town and Chadwick Lawrence.
Expertly compered by Town’s Commercial Director Sean Jarvis, Chadwick Lawrence’s Managing Partner Jeremy Garside was joined on the top table by the legendary Peter Shilton, Huddersfield Town Manager Mark Robins and ‘Welcome to Yorkshire’ Chief Executive Gary Verity.
Sean kicked-off the afternoon by explaining everything that has gone on at ‘The Yorkshire Club’ since the last Yorkshire Business Forum was held in 2013.
Gary Verity then took centre stage and gave a compelling account of the process behind ‘Welcome to Yorkshire’ securing the Grand Depart for 2014’s Tour de France, including the role the Yorkshire Terrier played in putting Yorkshire ahead of the competition!
After attendees enjoyed a two course meal, Jarvis was joined on stage by Town boss Mark Robins. Mark explained that the Club is only at the beginning of its progression having embedded a signature style of play this season, with a particular emphasis moving forward on bringing through home-grown players to the First Team.
Mark also told attendees that Huddersfield Town is a unique club in footballing circles due to its commitment to community activities, with PPG Canalside a particular shining light; something that he is proud to play a part in.
That paved the way for former England ‘keeper Shilton to take the mic. Peter experienced a lot en route to finishing his career with an astonishing 125 caps for his country and he gave the crowd an insight into his career, ranging from the start of his playing days as understudy to Gordon Banks at Leicester City to playing for his country in the World Cup under the legendary Bobby Robson.
Huddersfield Town’s Commercial Director Sean Jarvis explained:
“This year’s Yorkshire Business Forum was the fifth – and I believe the best yet. I would like to thank all our speakers; I felt they were all excellent in their own right and I’m sure attendees all thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon.
“It was inspirational to hear about the work that Gary Verity and ‘Welcome to Yorkshire’ had put into earning the Grand Depart. If there is ever a vote for a Prime Minister of Yorkshire, Gary has got my vote!
“Equally I know we had a lot of Town fans in the room and I’m sure they were excited for the future of the Club after hearing Mark Robins speak so intelligently.
“Finally, it was great to hear one of my footballing heroes Peter Shilton regale us with tales from his amazing career; I doubt his record number of caps will ever be beaten.
“Last, but by no means least, I would like to thank Jeremy Garside and the team at Chadwick Lawrence. Without their support, this event wouldn’t be possible.”
