Huddersfield Town is backing the ‘Be A Hero’ campaign in a bid to inspire fans to sign the organ donor register and raise awareness of the 800 people on their transplant waiting list in Yorkshire.
Following its launch by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in July 2015, the ‘Be A Hero’ campaign has been raising awareness of the importance of signing the donor register.
Now, with the help with some of the region’s most talented Sports Clubs, the campaign is engaging sports fans with the aim of encouraging the whole of Yorkshire to sign the donor register.
The ‘Be A Hero’ team, including superhero mascot, will be speaking with Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday fans at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday 2 April in the Sky Bet Championship Yorkshire derby.
With support from courageous Yorkshire families, who volunteered to speak about their first-hand experience of organ donation, an outstanding 42,000 Yorkshire residents have signed up to the organ donor register in the first five months of the campaign.
Dr Simon Flood, one of the Clinical Leads for Organ Donation at LTHT, said:
“We’re delighted to have local Championship teams on board, championing the organ donation message, and hope fans will take two minutes of their time to sign the donor register.
“Currently, only one in three people in Yorkshire are on the donor register and with around 800 people waiting for a life-saving transplant it is vital we all think about helping others after we’ve gone. We hope the ‘Be A Hero’ campaign will go some way to ensuring that, in time, everyone who needs an organ in Yorkshire will get one!”
Huddersfield Town’s Senior Commercial Manager Tracy Nelson added:
“We are very proud to be supporting such a significant local campaign that will have an important impact on the 800 Yorkshire people in need of a lifesaving transplant.
“We know our fans will get behind us in supporting the ‘Be A Hero’ campaign and will take the time to sign the donor register.”
